Reverb 10 – Appreciation

20 Dec

December 14 – Appreciate What’s the one thing you have come to appreciate most in the past year? How do you express gratitude for it? (Author: Victoria Klein)

I’ve come to appreciate PEOPLE – in all shapes and forms. One in particular: I’ve depended a lot on my husband and hopefully everyday I demonstrate my appreciation in my thoughts and actions.

However, throughout this year I’ve come to be less wary of strangers and have found nearly all the people I’ve met are just lovely. Sometimes it’s hard to show how grateful you are, like at the end of my contract I sent an email to all my colleagues to try to put into words how I felt, knowing that in person I’d end up tearful, which the next day was proved correct. Overall though, I believe in treating others how you like to be treated so I make sure I’m good mannered and openly friendly. There’s no better way to show you appreciate someone than to treat them properly.

December 13 – Action When it comes to aspirations, it’s not about ideas. It’s about making ideas happen. What’s your next step? (Author: Scott Belsky)

My next step is always right a list.

Reverb 10 – 11 things in 2011

12 Dec

Prompt: 11 Things. What are 11 things your life doesn’t need in 2011? How will you go about eliminating them? How will getting rid of these 11 things change your life?

This fits so seamlessly with our current situation of packing and repacking to relocate back around the world. We came to NZ with 2 checked pieces of luggage @ 23kg each and carry on luggage and now due to rule changes we are returning with only 1 piece to go in the hold. It’s not going fantastically well and there is a mass cull of clothing that will be too flimsy for Scottish summers; too tatty or too big.

So next year…

  1. Continue to lose weight – 11kilos would be great.
  2. Paper clutter – do I need to keep that Visa statement when I can see it online?
  3. Unloved items. I’m not one of those people who uses something they don’t love. If I love it, I’ll use it till it wears out.
  4. Fortune telling – as in over thinking/pre-analysing a situation to the point that I can’t do anything for fear it’ll cause offence or it’s so late I need to rush the task. I’m made head way with this but still got some way to go.
  5. Entitlement thinking – I’ve done X so I can do Y! Sometimes, I’ve found that I should think ‘I’ve done X so I should just be pleased.’ No extrinsic reward necessary.
  6. Housework guilt. – do it daily and not let it build up then I don’t need to think about it.
  7. Books – Here, I’ve enjoyed using the library and this is far better economically and environmentally.
  8. Workload stress – Use my time in the building wisely. Don’t stop at 3pm for a breather cos it’s harder to get going again.
  9. Ready meals – they’re expensive and full of artifical stuff. Better to eat beans on toast than a frozen ready meal.
  10. Excuses to not exercise. – this has improved but I need to remember why it’s important
  11. Magazine collecting – only buy select ones or subscribe and recycle old ones to avoid clutter.

It was quite hard to think of 11. Although I’m sure some of these things are so big they encompass many smaller things.

Reverb 10 – Wisdom

12 Dec

Prompt: Wisdom. What was the wisest decision you made this year, and how did it play out?

From the freedictionary.com

Wisdom is:

1. The ability to discern or judge what is true, right, or lasting; insight.

2. Common sense; good judgment

The decision to take the opportunity to apply for my current job,  has had a lasting positive effect. It was good judgment as I had visited the school, met some of the teachers, volunteered and worked there so I had a general feel for the place. I weighed up my decision as it was a long term temporary post which would tie me down and they stated they preferred NZ trained applicants but I figured if you’ve got to by in it to win it. It’s made financial sense but also more satisfying as, in the wee bit of supply teaching I did I didn’t find it so fulfilling as having my own class.

Reverb 10 – Rocking Social Gathering

12 Dec

Prompt: Party. What social gathering rocked your socks off in 2010? Describe the people, music, food, drink, clothes, shenanigans.

Yay for Shauna to throw in a prompt about good times!

This year I’ve been really lucky to attend lots of dinners/parties/even a dinner dance. But the ones that stick in my mind are 2 pub quizzes style quizes with my new colleagues at the time.

1st quiz – school staff, mixed themed teams. Mine was ‘French Connection’ or ‘Yacht bombers’ as one colleague called us. We wore berets, big black fake moustaches and stripes. We came 2nd equal! The banter to and fro was good natured although the 2 quiz masters were strict – wouldn’t like to be a kid messing about in their class! The beer went well with the ‘chippies’ and I was introduced to Jaffas! Not Jaffa cakes but Kiwi spherical red smarties – with no descernable orange taste.

2nd quiz  – I was a member of the staff team at the School Parents group fundraising quiz. We acquitted ourselves well coming 2nd again – even against a professional team! (Who knew they existed?) It was fancy dress again with ever so flattering itchy wigs! Unfortunately we were the only ones dressed up but ach well.

I spose the next pub quiz will have to be at the Cameo, Leith in 2011. – Bring it on.

@gwenbell
Prompt: One Word. Encapsulate the year 2010 in one word. Explain why you’re choosing that word. Now, imagine it’s one year from today, what would you like the word to be that captures 2011 for you?

So 1 word for this year….
Challenge
This is the year when I left Scotland for a Kiwi Adventure not knowing what lay ahead. We hadn’t decided how permanent the transition was, I had a 2 year sabbatical so had plenty of time to decide. We had to find our way, alone on the other side of the world. It was a good challenge. We’ve succeeded in stretching our boundaries and setting new ones.
I found work on my own in a foreign system. I found us a cute cottage with an awe-inspiring view. I walked a half marathon in 3hrs 5. I’ve run 5k several times. I’m losing weight successfully for the first time in years. I’ve met lots of good people. I’ve worked out what my highest priority is for this point in my life which leads me on to 2011..
Nest.
I want to create a safe, warm place for my family. I want to feel stable and be able to relax and enjoy my family. I want a home.
